Some weeks ago I discovered Gordon’s Wine Bar, minutes away from the Embankment tube station. From the outside it looks like a random pub, quite dark, dingy and let’s be honest not really attractive. Actually if you were passing by, you wouldn’t even notice it. Which is a shame, because Gordon’s is the oldest wine bar in London, existing since 1890!
After passing the door you will have to struggle with the narrow stairs and people coming up and down. But once inside you’ll find yourself in a cosy warm cave ! It kind of gives a pirate tavern feeling with barrels, candles, small tables in dark and small cave holes. You will even find a cell that you can book for bigger events.. It was rather difficult to get a seat in the seating area, and being 5’9″ I could only stand up straight in the middle of the room.
But regarding the atmosphere, walls are covered with old wine bottles, pages from yellowish newspapers, pictures of the Royal Family… Everything looks so British! It also offers a very large outdoor area with heaters. So if you are a smoker this would suit you better.
The place gets very busy, in an after work spirit. You may have to wait a bit to find an empty table. So I recommend to get there early!
Obviously the wine list is spectacular and it’s extremely difficult to pick one as the choice is way too extensive!
Gordon’s only offers appetizers and cheese. Which you will have to go treat yourself too as the bar doesn’t offer a table service. The advantage is that this way you’ll get to customize your very own cheese platter! Yummy! Portions are very large so come with an appetite. DIY salads and meat platters are offered too. And all this comes with really low prices! Amazing!
The French part in me just loves this place ! Good cheese and good wine in a charming traditional place with lot of history! What more could I ask for?
